The CPAR Uganda Ltd Prof. Fred Opio Ekong Memorial Library is now ready for use. It is located within the CPAR Uganda Lira Learning Centre on Plot 5 Makerere Road in Lira Municipality, right opposite the Lira District Local Government Offices, within a serene environment that is ideal for academics, researchers and other practitioners to dig into vast resources and to generate new knowledge. A wealth of knowledge is hosted in the library in the form of thousands of academic publications and hundreds of novels.

Academic publications within the library are of different disciplines, including: food security, nutrition, health, water, agriculture, forestry, environment, land, pastoralism, development, aid, culture, history, memoirs, biographies, autobiographies, sociology, gender, children, education, veterinary, zoology, biology, philosophy, politics, literacy, literature, poetry, satire, theatre, journalism, geography, economics, finance, math, fundraising, science, engineering, evolution, religion, psychology, justice, human rights, chemistry, physics, management, computers, and more.

Periodicals and peer reviewed academic journals are among the publications in the library, including: The Guardian Weekly; The Independent; Africa Renewal; Spore; Agriculture Review; Field Exchange; D+C; National Geographic; Health Insights; Surgical Clinics; Journal of Speech – Language Pathology and Audiology; Infection Control Canada; Management; and Forced Migration.

Without the support of our partners, our good intentions and efforts would have not borne fruit. We are therefore eternally grateful to our partners for gifting us publications; a gift that will keep on giving. The bulk of publications currently in the Library were gifted by: Canadian Physicians for Aid and Relief (CPAR), Vijana Corps, Mr. Stan Burkey, Dr. Ben Jones, Mr. Denis Ogoi Owaraga, and Ms. Norah Owaraga. We have received promises of publication gifts from others, and when we have collected and received them we will up-date accordingly.

Access to the library’s resources, including study areas, is through membership application and payment of membership or access fees. Annual Membership Fees (for the duration of 12 months) are set at UGX 200,000 (two hundred thousand shillings), about US$ 55 (fifty-five dollars) per person. However, those wishing to pay monthly subscription, the membership fees are set at UGX 30,000 (thirty thousand shillings) per month; which is less than ten dollars.

We appreciate that some of our users will not be residents of Lira, but perhaps visitors of Lira on duty and or otherwise. Visitors of Lira may wish to use the Library, hence, a daily access fee of UGX 2,000 (two thousand shillings) is set, which they can pay and have access to the library for the day.

The library is serviced by a canteen, which provides soft drinks and snacks. The library users can take breaks and buy soft drinks and snacks from the canteen, which they can take while enjoying the sights and sounds within the extensive grounds of the entire CPAR Uganda Lira Learning Centre. Lunches can be made available, on advance order, from CPAR’s Kitchen, which specializes in serving meals in the cuisine of the region.

Come join us as a member of the library and be doubly rewarded. The Membership Application Form is available to download here.

The membership and access fees that you pay not only give you access to a wealth of resources, they, in addition, will enable CPAR Uganda to serve our constituency. Your membership fees will enable us to fulfil our mission of ensuring that households in rural Uganda ably meet the basic needs of their members through enhanced livelihoods; access to healthcare, clean water, sufficient and nutritious food; and, therefore, lead healthy and dignified lives, during which their rights are respected and their basic needs are met.
