CPAR Uganda Symbolism

On Friday, 14th February 2020 we graduated our first cohort of young adults under our project: “Mentoring Young Adults into Innovators against Poverty,” who had completed the first of four modules of the programme.

We converted our vehicle parking shed into the venue in which we organised our certificate award ceremony. We used what was available and affordable to us. In practice of our ancestors’ traditions, for example, we used cow-dung for the floor and it worked perfectly well.

The placements at the high table each carried symbolic meaning. The central logic of our project is that we will innovate starting from what we have and know; and that we will utilize the wisdom of our ancestors who came before us.

With bow and arrows in hand we are committed to take forward the learning from CPAR (Canadian Physicians for Aid and Relief), from whence CPAR Uganda emerged, and to vigorously fight poverty.

Long before the climate change debate was “sexy” CPAR was in the fore front in the 1990s encouraging tree planting with its campaign: “Plant a tree in Africa” While in the past CPAR focused on contributing to curative healthcare, going forward, CPAR Uganda’s focus is preventative health care. Our brooms are in place, and using the wisdom of our ancestors, we will use them to sweep and throw poverty out!

Congratulations to our first cohort who successfully completed 23 days of training on “Understanding Poverty in Rural Uganda.” We are delighted to officially welcome you into the CPAR Uganda family as Innovators in training; and as volunteers under mentoring.
