Ms. Norah Mukebezi Opiio is an out-grower for hibiscus sabdariffa for Alinga Farms. She lives in Pallisa County in Pallisa District in Eastern Uganda. Alinga Farms, a Social Enterprise that is located in Kadoki Village, Akadot Parish, Pallisa Sub-County in Pallisa District, is owned by Ms. Norah Owaraga, who is also our Managing Director of CPAR Uganda.
Through her Alinga Farms, our Managing Director, has partnered with CPAR Uganda to promote growing high value crops; doing the value addition; and earning from them; and thus enhancing livelihoods for farming households in our area of operation. Alinga Farms is simply sharing the knowledge of how to do so and providing startup seeds for free; and with a guarantee that it will buy all the good produce.
One such high value crop is hibiscus sabdariffa. Read more about it here. It has high nutrition value, high economic value and it is culturally acceptable within the first nations of Uganda.
Other high value crops that Alinga Farms is popularlising among our CPAR Uganda stakeholders include:
Lemon grass (Mr. Ongom James, CPAR Uganda Lira Learning Centre Security Guard planting lemon grass in a sacks placed around the buildings at the centre.)
Spear Mint growing in the front yard garden of the Managing Directors home in Entebbe in a repurposed washing plastic basin which got broken.
Ginger growing in repurposed plastic drinking water bottles in the front yard garden of the home of our Managing Director in Entebbe.
