Uganda National Household Survey 2019/20 Summary

UBOS released the 2019/20 National Household Survey report. In summary, this is Uganda today:

  1. Total population = 41 million
  2. Average family size = 4.6 persons (largest in Teso 5.9 persons and smallest in Kampala 3.4 persons)
  3. Population below 18 years = 54 percent
  4. Urban population = 27 percent
  5. Net primary school enrollment = 91 percent
  6. Net secondary school enrollment = 27 percent (highest in Kampala 52 percent; lowest in Acholi 7 percent)
  7. Literacy rate = 76 percent (adults only 72 percent)
  8. Population with non-communicable diseases = 3.5 percent
  9. Population that abuse alcohol = 18 percent (highest in Karamoja 48 percent; lowest in Busoga 4 percent)
  10. Health insurance coverage = 4 percent (down from 5 percent in 2017)
  11. Ugandans working (o/o working age population) = 74 percent (down from 79 percent in 2017)
  12. Agriculture workers = 68 percent (up from 64 percent in 2017)
  13. Child labour = 28 percent
  14. Improved water source = 79 percent
  15. Three in 10 Ugandans have improved toilets
  16. Connection to grid electricity = 19 percent (down from 22 percent in 2017)
  17. Connection to solar = 38 percent (up from 18 percent in 2017)
  18. Mobile phones = 74 percent
  19. Radios = 32 percent (down from 45 percent in 2017)
  20. Television = 19 percent (up from 17 percent in 2017)
  21. Computers = 2 percent
  22. Internet use = 83 percent for social networking; 16 percent for business
  23. Households operating a business = 31percent (down from 38 percent in 2017)
  24. Source of capital = 81 percent own savings (loans from banks 0.4 percent)
  25. Households in subsistence economy = 39 percent (i.e. 3.5 million from 3.3 million in 2017)
  26. Population in poverty = 20.3 percent (down from 21.4 percent in 2017)
  27. Total population in poverty = 8.3 million (up from 8 million in 2017)
  28. Poverty distribution: Acholi 68 percent; Karamoja 66 percent; Bukedi 35 percent; Busoga 29 percent; Kigezi 28 percent; Lango 23 percent; Teso 22 percent; West Nile 17 percent; North Buganda 14 percent; Elgon 13 percent; Ankole 13 percent; Tooro 13 percent; Bunyoro 10 percent; South Buganda 07 percent and Kampala 02 percent.
  29. Contribution to national poverty by region: Busoga 14.5 percent; Bukedi 10.4% percent; Acholi 10.3 percent; Northern Buganda 8.1 percent; Teso 7.1 percent; Karamoja 6.5 percent; Tooro 6.5 percent; Ankole 6.4 percent; Lango 5.4 percent; South Buganda 5.3 percent; West Nile 5.2 percent; Kigezi 5.2 percent; Bunyoro 4.3 percent; Elgon 4.1 percent; and Kampala 0.5 percent
  30. Regions where poverty has reduced: West Nile (from 35 percent in 2017 to 17 percent in 2020); Bunyoro (from 17 percent to 10 percent); Teso (from 25 percent to 22 percent), Elgon (from 35 percent to 13 percent), Bukedi (from 44 percent to 35 percent), Busoga (from 38 percent to 29 percent), South Buganda (from 9 percent to 7 percent), Kampala (from 3 percent to 2 percent).
  31. Regions where poverty increased: Acholi (from 33percent in 2017 to 68 percent in 2020), Ankole (from 7 percent to 12 percent), Karamoja (from 60 percent to 66 percent), Lango (from 16 percent to 23 percent), Kigezi (from 12 percent to 28 percent), Tooro (from 11 percent to 13 percent), and North Buganda (from 11 percent to 14 percent).

  1. Great report. Would like to know reasons for increases in poverty in some regions, and those for reductions in others. This would contribution to ideas for improving poverty eradication activities in the country.

    • Thank you for your feedback. Yes, it would be nice to know the reasons, and also to interrogate the authenticity and the basis on which conclusions of existence of poverty or not are based.

  2. Importation overwhelming exportation is the major cause of poverty in Uganda. Why from the office of the president to the smallest office here don’t use locally made seats ?? Or can’t we make like 4 big clothes factory here ?, such that we limit foreign clothes here ? The population of 47 million can consume that.
