The Land and Equity Movement in Uganda (LEMU), for which the late Imat Judy Adoko was founder member and executive director for a long time, plans to fittingly honour her memory, of a scholar, a critical thinker, an activist and a practitioner.
Starting 5th March 2025, the second anniversary since she rested, LEMU plans to honor her memory through the annual “Judy Adoko Memorial Lecture and Workshops” that “critically think about and think with her work.”
- The State, the market and politics of land reform.
- Gender and the customary land question.
- Land grabbing, large-scale land acquisition and the cost of development.
- Land, food sovereignty and social reproduction.
- International financial institutions (IFIs), NGOs, donor agencies, and the land question.
The first Judy Adoko Memorial Lecture will he given by Professor Mahmood Mamdani, this is according to Dr. Theresa Auma Odur, LEMU Executive Director.
For more information and expression of interest to participate, please contact LEMU via email info@land-in-uganda.org and or click here.
Imat Judy Adoko was a member of the Uganda Country Advisory Committee of the Canadian Physicians for Aid and Relief (CPAR); who transitioned and were the founder members of CPAR Uganda. She served on the CPAR Uganda Board until she rested.
“Judy was a straightforward, diligent member of the Board. Simple to interact with,” Professor Dr. Christopher Garimoi Orach, CPAR Uganda Board Chair.
“Uganda has lost a wonderful, kind and giving lady. Judy always has been there when CPAR needed her and her contribution to the cause was exemplary,” Gizaw Shibru, CPAR Uganda Country Representative (1992-2008)
We, at CPAR Uganda, take comfort in the legacy Judy bequeathed us, Uganda and the world in her writings. In fact, she was among the Notable Medalists on Heroes Day 2022, during which her contribution of several publications was recognized by the State.
Through her work she lives on and what a great way LEMU has chosen to nurture our memory of her for posterity. We, at CPAR Uganda, pledge collaboration with LEMU, to emulate Imat Judy and similarly contribute writings that have a positive effect in “making land work for all of us.”
