Located along Mbale-Soroti Highway in Bukedea Town Council, Bukeda College of Health Sciences and its Teaching Hospital are privately owned institutions.

The Woman Member of Parliament representing Bukedea District and who is also the Speaker of the Parliament of Uganda, Anita Annet Among, owns both the college and the teaching hospital. Investments that she made in order to access “quality and affordable healthcare to the people of Teso and the neighbouring districts.”

Both institutions are examples of good public private partnerships. The land on which the college and the hospital are constructed was reportedly offered by Bukedea District Local Government. Construction was begun in 2017 and the official opening was on 23rd March 2024.

These are welcome developments for Teso sub-region where, “according to the Allied Health Professionals, more than 75 percent of the private health facilities are operating illegally. Some of the facilities reportedly have personnel who have never gone to any health training institute for medical courses” (source: URN published in The Independent).

“Building healthy communities in Uganda” is the overall objective for which CPAR Uganda Ltd is established. And to do so through engaging in “charitable, educational, emergency relief and scientific activities to stimulate the development, dissemination and widespread application of technologies suitable and adaptable to the social, cultural and economic conditions of developing countries.”

And so, we applaud Bukedea Health College of Sciences and its specialized hospital for contributing towards building health communities in Uganda; and look forward to potential collaborations when our CPAR Uganda Gulu Medical Centre begins operations soon.
