State of food security in Uganda

Stimulate development, dissemination and widespread application of technologies suitable for Uganda is the mission of CPAR Uganda

“Sustainable Development Goal 2: A world free of hunger by 2030” is a topic for which we would like to be more informed.

Primarily, so that we are able to effectively domesticate and adapt it for our area of operation, Greater Northern Uganda; and by extension Uganda as a whole.

“2 billion people in the world do not have regular access to safe nutritious and sufficient food. In 2024, 23.2% of children had stunted growth and 6.6% of children under the age of 5 were affected by wasting.”

This is according to the United Nations (UN), and which has provided insights in answer to the following questions in relation to achieving the ideal of a world free of hunger:

How many people are hungry?

Why are there so many hungry people?

Why should I care?

How can we achieve zero hunger?

What can we do to help?

These questions are on our minds as we extract data from the most recent, 2024 Uganda National Population and Household Census Report, recently published by the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) of the Government of Uganda.

We, at CPAR Uganda, are using the data to put together profiles for our strategic area of operation and we find the status of food security, nutrition security and food sovereignty are significantly concerning.

This is what the data UBOS collected and published says on the state of food security in Uganda, by sub-region and by district:

Acholi Sub-Region

Karamoja Sub-Region

Madi Sub-Region

West Nile Sub-Region

The data has generated for us more questions that urgently need to be asked, investigation and answers got if we, in Uganda, are to achieve the ideal of a world free of hunger by 2030; a deadline of less than five years now.
