Prof. Fred Opio Ekong has died

Our dear beloved Prof. Fred Opio Ekong, Founder Member of CPAR Uganda and Vice Chair of the CPAR Uganda Board of Directors, may your soul rest in eternal peace, we pray.

When we heard that you had been involved in a very bad car accident, a trailer had rammed into your vehicle, and that you were severely injured – eight broken ribs and a deep cut in the head, we rushed to your side and found you resting in comma at The International Hospital Kampala.

We moved from no hope at all to some hope for you remained stable but in critical condition. May he heal quickly, we prayed.

We made a contribution of UGX 5,000,000 (five million Uganda shillings) for your treatment. We are fully aware that our contribution does not begin to match your contribution to humanity.

You were among the rare genuine citizens of Uganda, of Africa and of the world. You were a good man. Your contribution to CPAR Uganda, the people of Uganda, of Africa and of the world was huge.

“We have lost a great man with all his knowledge whose heart was pro-poor; who spoke for the poor.”

Rev. Jacky Milton Otto Olima (quoted in New Vision)

“Prof. Opio was one of Lango’s best gifts to Uganda, and one of our leading lights in academia and one of the best economists the country has ever had.”

Mr. Joel Okao Tema (quoted in New Vision)

May our Lord God grant us the wisdom to celebrate your life, we pray. In your memory, may your CPAR Uganda family find the courage to continue your work and to emulate your good life, we pray.

We join Jennifer and your whole family in prayer that God’s Holy Spirit prevails over them.

LET US PRAY

Dr. Rita Laker-Ojok, CPAR Uganda Board Chair, Kampala, 5th April 2014
