Mindset of youth today on purpose of education

This post is in reaction to the propositions made by Dr. Laury Lawrence Ocen during the first team meeting of the Challenging Categories project and that were captured in short video titled: “Education is justice, education is excellence.” Click here to watch and listen to it.

We first want to agree with the statement made by Dr Laury Ocen about the mindset of youths today. It is like everyone goes to the university with an expectation that after school they will be employed by the government and that is what everyone for sure have in mind. People (with us inclusive) think so. Like when we were at school, we knew we would immediately be employed by the government.

This is the mindset that most of the youth are having. Not thinking that school is where we go to learn new skills and knowledge to earn a living, even without being employed by the government or non-government organisations (NGOs) or other people.

And the problem that we have now is bringing all this knowledge and packaging it in away that can make us to survive. So, because our brains have already been corrupted with the ideas that you go to school to be employed, it has made us not to see and know how we can package great knowledge that we learnt from school, in order for us to apply and help us navigate through life challenges.

In conclusion, we think it is all about mindset. So, what most of the educated unemployed or under-employed youth are lacking is people who can help to redirect and re-programme their thinking to be innovative, in order to find ways of surviving.

Otherwise, the experiences we have after school is that going to school is not all about getting a job, but rather to learn how you can put up yourself together and see how to manage life with the knowledge and skills obtained from our various institutions.
