Lady with backpack in the city, what’s she carrying?

A few days ago, a young lady stormed my office, in her hand, a delivery note that she needed signed. I do not have authority to append my signature to this document. So, I requested her to take a seat as I consulted. She didn’t sit but chose to follow me because, she didn’t have time! Admonished her? Of course, but will save that story for another day!

Her mission is what I will address today. Said lady barged into my space with a backpack which she laid down on the floor just outside my office door. When she came back, I asked her what was in the big back pack that she had carelessly dumped at my door. In a heart beat, she responded that it was the used sanitary towels that she had picked from the shared office toilet. My eyes popped and my mouth fell.

In backpack, used sanitary towels picked from office toilet.

This was almost a month ago but, ladies and gentlemen, I am still picking up my jaw and still trying to fix my vision!

  • How did we get here?
  • Who is in charge Why have we given up on ourselves?
  • Isn’t this supposed to be hazardous waste?

Since then, I have not stopped asking myself how others are coping with this situation. As for me and my sanitary waste, we have chosen to boycott the sanitary bin henceforth. The backpack will not be carrying my intimate possession! I refuse, ngaha, nganyi! I add my call to the ones made earlier by CPAR Uganda, menstrual hygiene should not be an idea but an aspiration for us all.

—– End —–
