45.9 million people

Uganda’s population is 45,905,417 people. This is according to the results of the 11th Uganda population census that was conducted in 2024 (data collected from 10th to 25th May 2024. Census Night was 9th May).

Who are Uganda’s people?

The Constitution of Uganda recognizes 65 indigenous communities, The majority, 94 percent (42,957,850) of Ugandans identify as belonging to the 65 first nations. Only 404,006 did not state which first nation they belong to.

Uganda’s population is not evenly distributed among its first nations. The largest five take up 46 percent (21,035,637) of the population as follows:

  • Buganda – 7,037,404
  • Banyakore – 4,200,782
  • Basoga – 3,703,535
  • Iteso – 3,146,079
  • Bakiga – 2,947,837

UBOS introduced an intriguing category of “others” in its presentation of the 2024 census results. A total of 10,284 people are categorized “others”. Who are they?

What distinguishes them from the category “unclassified” with 1,512,412 people and the category “non-Ugandans” with 1,020,865 people?

By Gender

Uganda’s population continues to be female dominated. Females are 23,591,128 million, which is 51 percent of the population; as compared to the males who are 22,314,289 which 49 percent.

By Age

A huge majority, 73 percent (33,519,852) of Uganda’s population is aged 30 years and below. Of whom the largest proportion, 68 percent (22,750,701) are aged below 18 years.

Life Expectancy

Compared to 1969, fifty five years later, Uganda’s life expectancy has significantly increased from only 46.5 years to 68.2 years. Women in Uganda continue to enjoy longer longevity as compared to men.
