“Very clever using the dutch angle to give us discomfort, for example, inducing reflection: “Is this the city we want?”. Very effective photo for a poster.”
Mr. Luswata Philip, media training program coordinator, praised the practice photo taken by Nassasira Peace, Media Change Agent in training, under our Dr. Paul Hargrave Memorial Centre Human Development project in Lira City.
The praise taking Nassasira by surprise that she had taken a great photo without even knowing she had.
“A Dutch angle is a photography technique where the camera is tilted sideways, creating a disorienting or dynamic effect. This is achieved by making the horizon line not parallel to the bottom of the frame.” CLICK HERE to read more on the Dutch Angle.
Explaining her photo, Nassasira indicated that it had been her intention to highlight the presence of a poorly maintained garbage bin near a restaurant.
Unknowingly, she used the Dutch angle; and which was effective in generating discomfort among us. She succeeded in communicating her discomfort of the state of affairs – eatery or restaurant, near a poorly managed rubbish bin.
A successful week of photography 101 it has been!
We are grateful to kin of the late Dr. Paul Hargrave for the legacy grant via Canadian Physicians for Aid and Relief, without which we would not be able to positively impact the lives of youth from disadvantaged backgrounds of greater northern Uganda. CLICK HERE to learn more.
