Where we work – Greater Northern Uganda

Over 95% of households in our CPAR Uganda strategic geography of operation, greater northern Uganda – West Nile, Acholi, Lango, Teso, Karamoja and Bukedi have annual earnings of only Shs. 10 million (USD 2,770) or less.

12.4 million people live below the poverty line

It means that the majority of households in our region survive on about Shs. 27,400 (USD 7.58) or less per day. The average household size for Uganda is five people, which means that the majority of people in our region survive on about Shs. 5,500 (USD 1.52) or less per day. They live below Uganda’s poverty line of USD 1.77 per day.

Assuming the region’s population of over 13 million people is evenly spread out in the region’s households, then it is feasible that 12.4 million people of the region live below the poverty line.

7.5 million people are food poor

It explains how come 58% of households in our region are food poor. The food poor households are not evenly spread out in the region but significant numbers exist in each of the sub-regions as follows:

  • 80% of households in Acholi are food poor
  • 75% of households in Karamoja are food poor
  • 66% of households in Bukedi are food poor
  • 54% of households in Teso are food poor
  • 44% of households in Lango are food poor
  • 31% of households in West Nile are food poor

Nearly 37% of households in our region are female headed. Be that as it may, it is likely that even in the majority male headed households, the responsibility for sustaining the household, specifically provision of food consumed in the home, is mostly borne by the females of those households.

The statistics used in the project description are derived from the most recent Uganda Bureau of Statistics Uganda National Household Survey.
