A Rare Board of Directors

Speaking as that Guest of Honour at the graduation ceremony that CPAR Uganda held on Friday, 14th February 2020 at its Lira Learning Centre, in order to awarded certificates to its first cohort of young adults who had successfully completed the first of four modules, “Understanding Poverty in Rural Uganda”, of its project: “Mentoring Young Adults into Innovators against Poverty,” Mr. Alex Okello Bwangamoi shared a glimpse of what it means to be on the Board of Directors of CPAR Uganda.

“You have been told that I am a board of director and I know that some of you also know what board of directors look like. Of those big companies, like CPAR – Board of directors for international companies. If you see the board members of CPAR, my name is the shortest. They are PhDs and what not, big people, those are the board of directors of CPAR.

But they are not like other board of directors of those companies, where when they are coming there is sitting allowance, there is what not; and when you come, the meeting is conducted in an air conditioned office. That is not for CPAR directors.

These board of directors for CPAR, for all these years, pull their money from their pockets to put fuel in their cars, if they have to go and do the work of CPAR. They come to CPAR and when the managing director says: “we have problems here,” they come and then they contribute money and they see how we can get money so that we solve the problem. That is what the directors come to do.

If you see on your certificate, there is somewhere where it is written GlobalGiving – the money that is sponsoring you, we had to mobilise the whole world on the computer and to give. And we started by giving US$ 100 each. I remember I was told, you are the chairman of finance – the money you are going to give will be the first mark that people will emulate. Then I said, okay, 100 dollars. That was the donation that I put into our project under which you are being sponsored.”

In order to raise funds for its project to mentor young adults into innovators, CPAR Uganda successfully partnered with the GlobalGiving Foundation and is utilising the latter’s online crowd fundraising platform to raise funds. Some of the CPAR Uganda Board of Directors and members led by example and were among the first to make donations. They include:

  • Prof. Dr. Christopher Garimoi Orach (Board Chair)
  • Dr. Rita Laker-Ojok (Phd) (First Board Chair 2008 – 2014)
  • Mr. Alex B. Okello (Board Finance Committee Chair)
  • Ms. Judy Adoko (Founder Member)
  • Mr. Gizaw Shibru (Member)
