On Friday, 30th July 2021, on our behalf, seven young adults who are benefiting from our mentoring programme and are stationed in Lira City, delivered our CPAR Uganda gift towards the fight against Covid-19 of 100 litres of liquid soap and 500 face masks to the Lira Resident City Commissioner (RCC).
Our gift was very well received by the Chairperson of the Lira District Covid-19 Task Force, Mr. Lawrence Egole, Lira RCC. According to Ms. Acio Sharon Enon, who is among the beneficiaries of our mentoring programme and was part of the delegation that delivered our gift, the Lira RCC received our gift with “a lot of happiness.”

Among the other high ranking and distinguished persons who witnessed the Lira RCC receiving our gift were: Dr. Benard Otucu – the Secretary of the Lira Covid-19 Task Force and Mr. Okello Robert – the Lira City Internal Security Officer.

In practice, indeed, RCC Egole is among government officials who is excelling in doing his very best to lead by example in effectively communicating government messaging on the fight against Covid-19, in his words and in his actions.
“I was impressed at how creative the Lira RCC is. When we went to deliver our gift, he was working from the veranda so that people could easily access him and in order to avoid overcrowding in his office. There was a tent put as a waiting place for people coming to his office. People were wearing face masks and there was a jerrycan of water for washing hands.”

The seven beneficiaries of our mentoring programme and who are being mentored by our Managing Director, Ms. Norah Owaraga, to become innovators against poverty in rural Uganda, who delivered our gift to the Lira RCC are: Ms. Acio Sharon Enon, Mr. James Opollo, Ms. Vicky Alum, Ms. Dorah Adoch Komakech, Ms. Ann Parlaker Gumkit, Ms. Gladys Awino and Ms. Salama Isagara.
They were accompanied by Dr. Lawrence Laury Ocen of Lira University, the Co-Investigator on our project, Challenging Categories: Educated Unemployed Youth as Institutional Innovators in Rural Uganda”; a project in which five of our mentoring programme beneficiaries who delivered our gift to the RCC are participating as research assistants to Dr. Ocen.
Our Challenging Categories project is a research and an advocacy project, on which Dr. Ben Jones of the University of East Anglia (UEA) is our Principal Investigator and which we are implementing in partnership with UEA and Lira University; with funding from The British Academy, under the British Government’s Global Challenges Research Fund.
